5 Day Mountain Gorillas and Nyiragongo Volcano Trek, Congo

Fascinating Safari in Congo: This is The Mane Tours, Ltd. 5-day safari within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This safari will take place in Goma and at the summit of Mount Nyiragongo which is located in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.You will go mountain gorilla trekking in the Virunga National Park and you will also see the world’s largest lava lake when you reach the summit of Nyiragongo volcano.

Day 1: Kigali – DRC (3-4 Hr. drive)
After breakfast in Kigali (own arrangement), you will be met by The Mane Tours guide/driver for a scenic drive through the Northern and Western Provinces of Rwanda. You will enjoy amazing scenic landscapes of Rwandan hillsides before making a lunch stop at Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu, one of the Great Lakes of Africa. An optional boat cruise can be arranged to experience the lake. From Gisenyi, you cross the border post at Goma switch vehicles and team with the Congo representative who will then transfer you to the lodge for an afternoon, relaxation dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Nyiragongo Volcano Ascent

You will be driven to the Kibati Patrol post for briefing before starting the ascent to the Nyiragongo Volcano. Rising to 3470m (11,385 feet) above sea level, the Nyiragongo Volcano is part of the greater Virunga massif that straddles from Uganda through Rwanda to Democratic Republic of Congo comprising of eight (8) volcanoes. The Mountain stands with the world’s largest lava lake which is also the most violent with the notable eruptions of 1997 and 2002 of which the latter destroyed half of the town of over 20km (12 miles) away. The hike to Nyiragongo Volcano is not so strenuous and even first time hikers can attempt it. It takes four to six hours to reach the summit where you will overnight in the Mountain Shelter and be amazed at the sight of the red glowing lava lake at night.

Trekkers are strongly advised to bring full rain and cold weather gear (moisture-wicking base layer, sweater or fleece, jacket, rain resistant pants, long underwear, warm socks, hat, and a 0° / 32°-Celsius-rated sleeping bag), good walking shoes, sunscreen, etc.

Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano Descent
You will wake up for an early morning sightseeing experience including the magical sun set and the clouds in the valleys below. After breakfast, you descend to the starting point at Kibati Patrol Post. You will enjoy the views of the flora and the lava soils along the way. Your driver/guide will then take you back to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, you will be driven to the Bukima Patrol Post for a briefing. You will then start your trek with your armed ranger guides and head to the jungle on the slopes of the Volcanoes National Park in search of these critically endangered Apes. You traverse the jungle enjoying the sights and sounds of birds and other fauna before coming across these gentle giants as they forage, socialize and young ones play. The one full hour is allocated for direct viewing and lasting picturesque opportunities after which you transfer back to the starting point and then to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Goma – Kigali
After breakfast, you will do a city tour of Goma and then cross back into Rwanda where your driver/guide will meet you. You will then go back to Kigali to your preferred hotel or to the airport.
