On the first day of this safari, The Mane Tours driver will meet you at the Kigali International Airport (KGL) to transfer you to the border of Grande Barrière Rwanda-DRC. You will be welcomed by our Congo staff at the border and they will assist you in the border crossing formalities. After crossing the border, you will be transferred to your hotel to check in. Once there, there will be a short briefing to inform you of the details of this safari.
Day2: Mountain Gorilla Trek
After an early morning breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for Virunga National Park for Mountain gorilla trek. All treks are led by park rangers and depart from Bukima patrol post. Treks may require one to two hours of hiking in each direction, depending on where the Mountain gorillas spent the previous night and the difficulty of the terrain. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend an hour with them to enjoy this experience to its fullest.
After trekking the gorillas, if you are not too tired, you may do a Goma city tour. You will visit many attractive sites such as local markets, museum, the lava that burnt the town in 2002, city monuments, Lake Kivu, Goma harbor, hotels and restaurants, and all the places that make Goma such a fascinating city to explore. It is also an occasion to interact with locals and learn about their history and their life. At the end of the tour, you will be amazed by the capacity of resilience of the locals. During the tour, you will stop for lunch.
Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano Hiking
Since there is no food service on Nyiragongo, after breakfast at the hotel, you will do some shopping for some food to take with you, before you depart for the Kibati patrol post. This is where the treks to the summit of Nyiragongo volcano begin. Park rangers lead all treks and porters (unaffiliated with the park) are available for hire at the Kibati ranger station. The time required to reach the summit depends on the average fitness of each group but typically takes four to six hours. It is possible for people in excellent shape to climb up and descend in one day, but the vast majority chooses to overnight in the basic accommodation available at the top (included in the permit fee) because the best time to view the lava lake is at night.
Trekkers are strongly advised to bring full rain and cold weather gear (moisture-wicking base layer, sweater or fleece, jacket, rain resistant pants, long underwear, warm socks, hat, and a 0° / 32°-Celsius-rated sleeping bag), good walking shoes, sunscreen, etc.
You will enjoy the sunset at the summit of Nyiragongo and enjoy watching, in the night, the world’s largest lava lake. You will have your dinner and overnight at the summit of Nyiragongo volcano in the shelter.
Day 4: Nyiragongo Volcano Descent – Kigali
After a very early morning visit to the lava lake, you will have your breakfast at around 7:00 am. After breakfast, you will descend the volcano and arrive back at the Kibati station. Your guide will drive you back to Goma for lunch. You will go back to the border to return to Rwanda for your drive back to the Kigali International Airport (KGL) for your flight to your next destination.
