16 Day Best of Tanzania at a Leisurely

Day 1 The Mane Tours, Ltd. driver/guide will greet you at the Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha and escort you to your overnight lodging. Driving time is approximately 1 hour.

Day 2 In the morning we will depart for the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation area. We will stop at the village of Mto Wa Mbu. There, you will have time to explore the village before enjoying a traditional lunch. Afterward, we will visit a Maasai Village before continuing on to the Ngorongoro Crater area lodging. Driving time without game viewing approximately 4 hours.

Day 3 We will make our descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, the Earth’s largest unbroken caldera. A veritable “Garden of Eden”, the Crater is reputed to contain the highest density of carnivores, which includes cheetah, leopard, and lion. This is the only place in East Africa where one will have opportunities to observe a natural population of black rhino, highly endangered. You will have a full day of exploring the Crater with a picnic lunch. We will then return to your lodging.

Day 4 Today we will visit the Olduvai Gorge which is one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites on Earth. It was here in the 1950s that Louis and Mary Leakey first uncovered the fossilized teeth and skull of one of our earliest ancestors. After the interpretive presentation, we will continue to the Serengeti National Park. Driving time to Olduvai Gorge is approximately 2 hours, then to the Serengeti is another 3 hours

After we enter the gate entrance to the Serengeti, we will stop for a picnic lunch before proceeding on a game drive to the lodging. The Serengeti is Tanzania’s most renowned national park. It is home to the greatest concentration of large mammals on Earth. The migratory herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle roam widely in search of green grass and water.

Day 5 You will wake up early for a 4 am departure for the hot air balloon safari. After a thorough safety briefing and demonstration of boarding and landing position, you board your balloon and lift off! Rising as the sun rises your balloon floats in whatever direction the winds of the day are heading over this wonderful area. It is an adventure of a lifetime. Whereas we know where we have started, we genuinely do not know where we will land as we float in the direction of and speed of the wind.

After landing, you celebrate in the traditional way with a champagne toast before heading off to a special ‘Out of Africa’ breakfast. Breakfast is prepared in the bush and served under a convenient acacia tree. Linen, bone china, Sheffield cutlery and freshly prepared fare in the company of your fellow passengers makes a memorable finale to your adventure.

After breakfast, you are taken to the rendezvous point to meet with your driver guide and me and have an afternoon game drive.

Day 6 We have morning and afternoon game drives with leisure time in between.

Day 7 After a leisure breakfast, we will drive back to Arusha, observing the wildlife as we drive through the Serengeti. We will have lunch at the lodging for the evening. Driving time is approximately 5 hours to Arusha with possible game viewing along the way.

Day 8 We will go to the Arusha National Park today. The park has an incredible variety of fauna and flora, which cannot fail to impress. Your day trip will include a visit to the Ngurdo Crater. Buffaloes, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, zebras, and baboons can be seen all year round as well as many different bird species. We will have a picnic lunch and afternoon game viewing before we return to our lodging. The drive to the park is approximately 1 hour.

Day 9 Today we will take you to the Tarangire National Park for game drives. Tarangire is known for a wonderful diversity of wildlife and a stunning landscape dotted with baobab trees as well as large herds of elephants and over 260 species of birds. We will have a picnic lunch and have a short afternoon game drive before returning to our lodging. Driving time to Tarangire without game viewing is approximately 3 hours.

Day 10 After breakfast we will proceed to Lake Manyara National Park. Some of the attractions found there may not be seen in other famous parks, such as the groundwater forest– an evergreen forest fed by freshwater springs– and the Great Rift Valley escarpment, one of the most unique and beautiful sceneries in the park. You will be amazed by the diversity of wildlife species and habitats. The lake forms the most spectacular sight of the high diversity of bird species both migratory and resident, especially the spectacular volumes of flamingos.
