7 Day Gorilla Trekking and Chimpanzee Safari Tour
The Mane Tours’ 7 Day gorilla trekking and chimpanzee safari tour is perfect for the visitors that have a week to spend in Rwanda. After trekking to see the mountain gorillas you will also trek to the grave site of Dian Fossey and visit the Karisoke Research Center. Then you will travel to the Southern Province to go chimp tracking. On the way back to Kigali you will stop at Huye to visit the National Museum and King’s Palace.
DAY 1: Kigali – Musanze (2 hr. drive)
On your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your driver/guide and transported to the area of Volcanoes National Park
DAY 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
You will have an early morning wake up, have breakfast, and then proceed to the park headquarters for a briefing. A ranger will be your guide as you go gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes forest. You will be amazed by the huge size of the silverback and the behavior and communication skills of these unique creatures, among other things. During your one hour stay, you will observe and learn from these magnificent creatures. You will return to your lodging for lunch and then go on a culture and heritage tour around Musanze.
DAY 3: Dian Fossey
After enjoying your breakfast early, you will embark on a hike to the Dian Fossey Research Centre and gravesite. It is there that the famous primatologist Dr. Dian Fossey spent close to two decades habituating, studying and conserving the endangered Mountain Gorillas. The movie Gorilla’s in the Mist (1988) with Sigourney Weaver was also filmed there.
DAY 4: Butare (Huye)
After a delicious morning breakfast, you will travel south to Butare, presently renamed Huye. Your visit to the National Museum will give you a more in-depth exposure to Rwandan history, culture, and art and crafts. After lunch, you will proceed to the area of the Nyungwe Forest before chimpanzee tracking the next day.
DAY 5: Chimpanzee trekking
After an early morning breakfast, you will arrive at the park headquarters at Kanyanchu for a briefing from the park warden. At 8.30 am, you will begin the hike into the lush tropical rainforest. The forest is endowed with abundant mammals and forest birds. Big troops of Angola colobus monkeys and chimpanzees are a big spectacle in this mountain forest.
The Nyungwe Forest is East Africa’s largest forest, with 13 monkey species, including Angolan Black Colobus, Mona Monkey, and Owl Faced Monkeys.
DAY 6: Nyanza King’s palace and Gisozi Genocide Memorial
After breakfast, you will travel back to Kigali, stopping midway to visit the Nyanza King’s palace. In the afternoon you will visit the Gisozi genocide memorial site in Kigali.
DAY 7: Kigali
If your flight is in the morning, your guide will take you to the airport first thing in the morning. If you have a later flight, you can, at your discretion, take a Kigali city tour.
